A Tale of Two Families: Here I narrate with insight and drama the lives of two families, one Protestant, the other Roman Catholic, in the rural Philippines. I narrate how the Garcia family, Catholics, headed by Juan, live out their lives. Up the street is Wenico and Lennie Valdez, Protestants. The story depicts, also, how they live their lives. Other characters impinge upon both the Garcia and Valdez households, bringing twists and turns, and highlighting certain characteristics of not only the two families but also of everyday life in the Philippines. Both the Garcia and Valdez families are about equal in socio-economic status, and largely in terms of education, also. But there are differences, as will become evident. Perhaps the main difference is their religion, and it is worth exploring how and why this affects how each family, and each individual, lives out their lives according to the underlying perception of the world, grounded in their religious orientation. In particular, Mark, an anthropologist in the narrative, is particularly interested in why Catholics vis-à-vis Protestants have more children: it’s not a matter of “if ” but, for him, why. The other characters and events highlight differences between the two families, and between Protestants and Catholics, between rich and poor, exploiters and exploited, powerful and powerless, men and women, and so on. But what is fundamental to their similarities and differences? How do they actually come about?

Ever since 1968 when Frank Lynch at the IPC wrote his BRAC study—saying that the (Catholic) Church and religion had no effect on Filipino fertility levels—the topic has been largely taboo and ignored. The Habitus of Fertility: A Tale of Two Families challenges that legacy, suggesting that there is indeed a fertility differential between Catholics and Protestants (in the Philippines) and Part 1 goes further to show how such a disposition is acquired and operationalized.

Part 1 narrates with insight and drama the lives of two families, one Protestant the other Roman Catholic, in the rural Philippines.

In Parts 2 and 3 the essential problem is to show how an idea, a mental perspective, a disposition, can be actually operationalized, and across generations. With persistence all will encircle and become clear.

I Can Never See My Self. Sanitee T'Chong

Mark, a retired, divorced professor, looking for a young female travel companion, falls in love with one of his research subjects, Annalyn, and sets out to educate her and help her poor family in the rural Philippines. But her education changes her to reject Mark’s love and exploit him. Despite helping other similar girls, he is left with no girlfriend. Finally, he embarks on helping yet another girl. Through these engagements he realizes that these girls cannot see themselves as perhaps others do, nor the possibility of a better life; and the only way they can move forward to that is with outside help, of sorts. But in order to benefit from such patronage they need to see themselves as something other… As Mark travels the country with different girls their adventures depict and remark on various aspects of Philippine culture, society and life. Mark’s search for love shows that desire is sad, sometimes cruel, and girls beguiling.

A focus on systemic problems & issues of EFL teaching/learning in Taiwan. Despite goal posts constantly shifting, nothing changes: rote learning, exams, hierarchic structures, culturally-based vis-a-vis earned respect, cheating/plagiarism, credentialism, profiteering, linguistic incompetence, & political infighting persist. Despite 9yrs of EFL many college graduates are not competent in English. The various chapters focus on systemic problems and issues that lay many of the ills of EFL teaching/learning and education on MoE and the teaching institutions. Begins with an overview of pre-school education and EFL, Part 1 focuses on direct observations of actual teaching episodes in schools, from pre-school to University education levels. Five papers form a series of studies employing the same methodology, as described in the papers. We aimed to examine the connection, or lack thereof, between MoE requirements/guidelines and the actual fulfillment of them, by focusing on the practical, everyday teaching and learning of EFL. What we essentially found was a consistent misfit between policy and practice, despite the best efforts of many of the teachers and schools. In Part 2, Reflections, contributors reflect on their teaching experiences in Taiwan, and offer some suggestions for improvement.

Complementary therapeutics have proliferated since the 1970s. This book treats "alternative" therapies both as a spearhead and as a reflection of widespread changes in attitudes—and of resistance to such changes, which has not infrequently been crammed with blasts against "quacks". Indeed, it was commonly insisted that these "illiterate fungi" were more prevalent than ever; and there were repeated calls for legislative intervention to put down the “hydra” amidst the explosive outrage against what was considered as latter-day witchcraft: the "satanic system of quackery".
Alternative" therapies seem to be a sort of avant-garde for new ideas about health and the body, as well as symptomatic of much wider societal changes. In short, this annotated bibliography, read as a chronology, traces a change in beliefs and attitudes, where the body, health, nature and society have come to mean different things and imply different consequences for both the individual and society—or particular segments of it.
By no means is the book exhaustive, and given the rapid and growing publication of material in this field, it can never be complete. There are still many areas to be explored, not least of which are the gender and ethnic dimensions in complementary therapeutics, the experiences of users to be more thoroughly examined, the relationship between the lay person and the expert, and the tacit and uncodified knowledge of the practitioner, etc. Thus we take this compilation as a starting point, as we hope you will.
While this compilation is not divided according to different therapies and practices, it does attempt to list publications which cover most of the so-called alternative therapeutics. The listings are arranged simply in alphabetical order by author's surname, capped with a comprehensive index.

Are They Serious? The Discourses of Family Planning, Bio-Citizenship and Nationalism in the Philippines

By Dr. Paul Mathews    $1.99

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/681248

This book explores the discourses of bio-medicine (ie. Family Planning), nationalism and citizenship specifically in the Philippines. Little has been researched into how the biomedical discourse has helped constitute the nature of citizenship of the Filipino for the purpose of building a nation-State; that is, who is a proper and fit person to be a citizen of and to reproduce the nation-State.  Little attention has been given to basic antagonistic class relations and how these may be linked with Family Planning (FP).

This nationalist narrative is constructed in terms of neo-eugenics and neo-Malthusianism, with the objectives and consequences of maintaining a high level of population growth.  This public health effort gives rise to a new problematique and to a perceived, new “risky” population: unrepentant bodies.

The over-riding question of this paper is: why would the State implement a FPP for the lower classes when it was clearly thought by policy makers that the former were incapable if being uplifted?

Male Prostitution: Two Monographs by Paul Mathews
smashwords.com/books/view/662166
The first paper describes aspects of male prostitution of Ermita (Manila, Philippines) in the 1980s and '90s. I suggest various reasons for such prostitution, how the boys reconcile their activities with church and morality, and how they construct their sexual identity. The second paper is a critique of "Being A Prostitute" in Australia, that unconvincingly suggests all such prostitutes are gay.

PRINCES OF BEAUTY: Boy Prostitution in Sydney by Dr. Paul Mathews.

Male sex-workers are motivated to achieve; they cannot be considered in purely psychological or sexual terms. Boys from the working & middle classes choose to be prostitutes vis-a-vis classical stereotypes. It questions male prostitutes & their clients as gay, dirty & unmotivated. A sociological study with case histories & a review of the features & causes of & literature on male sex-workers.

This book address the yawning gap in both academic and general knowledge of male prostitution. This counters recent discourse and notions about childhood sexuality. It challenges the notion that boys cannot make conscious decisions to engage in sexual activity; it denies that they have some form of power. It asserts that such sexuality occurs with consent among both the working and middle classes.

The Trinity of Terror

A narrative of power,

a question of power,

a challenge to power ! …

by

Sanitee T'Chong

Beware the Ides of March !  17 year old ABC student, Samantha Guimoi, ensnares the men in her life to further her own selfish ends. Mark was but one of a litany of men—and not the last—with whom Sam flirted, seduced, and fucked, to achieve her goals.

Samantha had the power of erotic capital, but the moral and administrative power of bitch brigades and feminine discourses were blind to its capacity. In their myopic view of the world that they fabricated, they inverted power relationships, claiming all women, especially young, nubile Asian student girleens, were victims, Asian victims, of tacit male power.

This is a tale about a monster.….

but who is the monster ?

Mark's relationship with Samantha at the University of No Ideas exposes the dark secrets of the ivory-tower. His relationship with Sam is as much about sex as it is about feminism, student-teacher relationships, and the silly laws and moral discourses that govern the Academy. It is also about the media, moral terror, cyber terrorism, sexuality, and fat peeple….. amongst other fat things.

Someone Like Me….Of Difference and Anguish. Sanitee T’Chong.   ISBN: : 9780463235584
smashwords.com/books/view/960737
This long book (450pp) is about bullying. James’ basic thesis is that his early life is representative of many young people growing up; it is a period of growth in which they encounter many trials, tribulations and small triumphs, in a society that is unable or unwilling to acknowledge these tribulations, and especially the sexuality of young people and the bullying they experience, and its effects. James was different, and he dared to be different. As a result, he was teased, bullied, marginalized, labelled strange, and experienced a lot of anguish. Thus, his life was often about finding someone like him, to avoid loneliness and friendlessness, to be understood.
James wrote this narrative diary to tell his story, without clear intent. And when one looks at it, it does seem to be all about him. But when you begin to look at what he experienced, suffered, it is in fact more about the society in which he lived; and although it is set in the 1950s to ‘70s, many of the conditions, thinking, social attitudes and so forth continue to exist as they were, as some legacy of bygone days. Time has marched forward, but attitudes and behaviours have not.
James’ story, the story of his life, then, is not about him, but the effect that myopic social views have of individuals, not least of which is bullying in some form or other, to the effect, at the extreme, of suicide or murder. And if it is suicide as a result of bullying then it is murder….social murder.

LOST IN TRANSITION. A story of Bullying. Sanitee T’Chong

Langley Badcock was one of those kids who could never get a date growing up in Melbourne of the 1960s & ‘70s. He was ugly, as skinny as a blade of grass, unkempt, labeled a poof. Besides, he went to an all-boys school. He was always loath to attend a social function for fear of being ridiculed, teased, bullied. He was destined to be just one of those boys who never fitted in, would never fit in.

Everyone would like to say they had a good, happy childhood, a nice home, with plenty of food, a loving family, supportive siblings, a friendly neighbourhood, friends, and who enjoyed school, and did well in their studies. But that can’t be said for Langley Badcock, or Lang for short—or gangly Langley as he often thought of himself.

No, he was one of those kids we see in American movies who can’t get a prom date, or in fact any date. But Melbourne didn’t even have proms when Langley was growing up in the 1960s and early ‘70s. Just as well, he often thought when he saw those stoopid B-grade feel-good American teen movies, for he would never have been able to get a prom date. I mean, he was so ugly, as skinny as a blade of grass, scrawny, unkempt, and “known” to be a poof, that no girl would ever even look at him once, let alone twice. Besides, he went to an all-boys school, so where the hell would he come in contact with girls? Hire one for a prom?—now there’s a business for an entrepreneur! Ask his sister if one of her ugly friends would pretend to be his date? And even if he could get a girl, he would loath to attend any public function for fear of being ridiculed, teased, bullied, and especially in front of a girl of all people!

No…. Better to skip social occasions altogether. He was destined to be just one of those boys who never fitted in, would never fit in.

ROLL ON… A Changi POW Remembers. The Secret Diary Kept by Corporal Joseph Nutter. R.A.M.C. By Joseph Nutter. Compiled by Betty Pyke.

Corporal Joseph Nutter was only 21 when he enlisted in the British Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C) in 1936, to train as a Nursing Orderly. He left a note on the mantel for his mother, advising her, “Gone to join the Army !”

When the Japanese invaded Singapore in 1942 Joe was working at Alexandra Hospital. He was captured, and interred in Changi POW camp. He recorded in a secret diary of four small books the conditions and events between February 1942 and July 1943. Entries were recorded daily, meticulously written in his copperplate handwriting. They include the Selarang Barracks incident and a forced march of 170 miles to the Burma railway. He was frequently called upon to assist in surgical operations without proper medical equipment and facilities. These horrific episodes for which he was not trained were in addition to his normal duties and responsibilities in the field of first aid, health and hygiene. During his 3½ years as a POW Joe experienced several ailments himself, including diarrhea, beriberi, malnutrition, malaria, dysentery and skin diseases.

He never returned to England, having migrated to Australia in 1945 after liberation. This book replicates Joe’s diary verbatim, with added annotations, explanations and illustrations.

A Virus of Everything. Dr. Paul W. Mathews.

A new virus was sweeping the globe. How far would it challenge or sweep aside the endless diseases of desire, of human yearnings—of love, lust, passion, greed, ambition, selfishness, and calamities of poverty, tempest and soullessness?

Mark was soul sick. Once again he was alone, and hence vulnerable. His psyche was howling for a new role in life he could call his own, his soul was screaming to be loved and nurtured. It was at this point that he excavated his own life from the dismal heap of circumstances that surrounded him. Free to spend hours every night chatting to Asian girls on-line in search of a loving companion, he finally met poor Annie, both cute and endearing. He flew to her arms, befriended her family, sent her to college, bought her land, paid expenses…. A year of bliss. Then she changed, for the worse, but he was infected by her poison. A litany of demands followed. He began his search again, and again…

Five years later a new virus swept the globe. Annie was in trouble: a pandemic, a typhoon, death, floods that were meant to wash away the virus, brought him back to her. Nonetheless, once again he was alone. All he could have were memories past. Love, it seemed, was a virus, and he was still not immune.
